The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.
I love reading in the Bible when Jesus began to wash the feet of His disciples. During those times it was customary for a servant to wash the feet of their masters before a meal. When Jesus got up to wash the feet of His disciples prior to the last supper he was doing what the scum of the earth at that time did. To me that signified His humility and servanthood. Jesus didn’t have to wash the feet of His disciples, He chose to cleanse their feet because He wanted to lead by example and show them that servicing others was all about having a humble heart and mind as we help to build each other up.
That is what Gandhi meant by servicing others. When I help others I get this feeling of fulfillment and gratification because I got to do something good. During this holiday season that is my goal, to be able to elicit change in a time of need. If you’re struggling to figure out who you are, what you mean to this world, I challenge you to serve others. Or someone. Give someone a ride to the grocery store. Bake a fresh pumpkin pie for the neighbor with MS. Surprise your hubby by picking up the dog poop. Little things make up the whole.
You are a part of a whole. Help build that whole up. Serve others. Be the difference. And in turn, you’ll find yourself.
PS Happy Halloween y’all.
